SECTION 38
SPECIAL PROBLEMS -- PRODUCTION COMPANIES AND DISTRIBUTORS ON INVENTORY RECORDS

When an inventory form gives a company name:

  1. If it is known to be the original production company (the company that actually made or created the film or program), put it into the 245 $c subfield (statement of responsibility) directly after the title, before any personal name credits. If the company name contains within it some form of the word 'production', it is all right to assume it is a production company. Major studios of the 1930's and early 1940s acted as both production company and distributor, so studio names may be given in the 245 field for that period.

    EXAMPLE:

  2. If the company is a distributor (i.e. it releases films rather than making them), and if the item inventoried is a different version from the original release version, or from any other version already in ORION, see SECTION 40, SPECIAL PROBLEMS--RERELEASES, REISSUES, below. The terms 'distributed by' or 'released by' are usually followed by the name of a distributor. A company name that contains within it some form of the words 'distribute' or 'release' is probably a distributor.

  3. If the company is known to be the original distributor, and as far as we know, the inventoried film is the original release version, put the company name into a 500 publication/distribution note (see SECTION 5.6 for the order of the note.)

    EXAMPLE:

  4. If, as far as we know, the inventoried film is the original release version, and the company is either known to be a later distributor, or its function is unknown, quote it in a copy-specific note in a NOTES: note in the $z subfield of the 866 field.

    EXAMPLE:

  5. If, as far as we know, the inventoried film is the same version as another item already described in ORION, and the company is not associated with all copies of that version, quote it in a copy-specific note in a NOTES: note in the $z subfield of the 866 field.
