CATALOGING PROCEDURE MANUAL--VOYAGER

SECTION 43
SPECIAL PROBLEMS--STUDENT FILMS

ENTRY: Follow AACR2, modified by LC practice, and enter all student films under title, including those with just a single person's name on them.

DESCRIPTION: If there is any evidence that the film was ever distributed (e.g. an entry in Educational film locator), treat it as published, and list the distributor (when known) or [s.n.] (when not known) in the 260 field. Otherwise treat as unpublished material; (Bib. 008/15-17 (Place of publication) code xx, 260 field, date only).

Not all student films are theses. Those that are should be given a thesis note (502); see SECTION 5.7.3, DISSERTATION NOTE. If it is not clear whether it is a thesis or not, make a 500 note: 'UCLA student film,' or 'UCLA student video.'

NAME ADDED ENTRIES: Be sure to trace the student whose film it is. In addition, trace major production credits given in the statement of responsibility, as well as editors and photographers. Also, trace the first cast member.

SUBJECT AND GENRE ADDED ENTRIES: Add genre headings where appropriate. Add topical subject headings to all works of nonfiction. Add the following local subject heading to all student films (regardless of whether they are theses or not; link this to the 993 donor/depositor code in 905 $c):

655 _ 7 $a Student films and video. $2 local

Some of the films in the student film collection are actually brief records of theater productions (just a scene or part of a scene on film.) Make the following note for these materials:

500 _ _ $a A brief record of a UCLA Theater Arts Department theater production.
